I Created A Monster!

Adrian Litvinoff bassistFunny thing, New Year. For some, it’s a time of reflection and preparation, for others an arbitrary and transitory moment signifying little.  I can’t help feel that a year is some kind of entity in our lives, and therefore the end of one and onset of the next is not the same as, say, any other midnight.

The year just gone has been full, if frustrating in many ways. Musically it has had its highs and lows. It’s been harder than I can ever recall to get live work, but given the economic crisis that’s hardly surprising. At the same time I’ve spent more time in recording and post-production than I ever envisaged.

Among the live highlights of last year I must include Interplay’s gig at Swindon for International Jazz Day. Baker Street, the venue, was packed for Continue Reading I Created A Monster!…

My blogging 2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog. While 2012 was a slightly quieter year than 2011 or 2010, I’ve learned some fascinating things about who visited the site and where they live! Places like Hungary, Indonesia and Brazil, as well as Germany, France and the good ol’ US of A.

I’d like to thank everyone who took time to visit the site, read a post, leave a comment, listen to a track or look at some photos.  Hopefully there will be good news early in 2013 about our second album and other band activities.

Happy listening in 2013!

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 1,900 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 3 years to get that many views.

(Actually the rest of it is much better!)

Interplay studio time, continued...We’ve been spending lots of time in the studio recently, finishing the mixes for our new album.  We’re aiming for as ‘live’ a sound as possible, but even so it’s amazing how many things there are to take into account. Balance between the instruments is the most obvious one, and it changes considerably between tunes and with variations in individual playing intensity. Then there’s ‘placing’ each instrument, in terms of its apparent distance from the listener and location Continue Reading Interplay studio time, continued……

Alto saxophonist Mike OsborneAn old friend from Bristol gave me a Fopp record token for Xmas.  We used to have Fopp here in Leamington but after the firm ‘restructured’ there are very few branches left.  So down to London we went for a day of cruising the music shops and theatre.

Interplay on stageIt’s almost four months since Interplay last played to a real live audience! Sign of the times I guess, with gigs becoming noticeably scarcer all around. So it is with real pleasure as well as a certain amount of relief that we announce our first appearance of 2012, next Wednesday March 14th in Leamington Spa for Leam Jazz.

Besides affording us the pleasure of playing for its own sake I take a special Continue Reading Interplay back in the land of the gigging!…

Interplay recording at the Shoe Factory, Rushden

I’ve just spent two days listening back to everything we recorded in August at Nick Weldon’s Shoe Factory in Rushden, Northants.  Amazingly we put down 20 tunes while we were there, including many of our current repertoire and some we haven’t played much in a while.  The results are really gratifying – several ‘first takes’ and many more that need just a little tweak to Continue Reading Interplay recording at Rushden – the next stage…
