LAMP - venue for Interplay's gig on May 24thOur next gig sees Interplay back in Leamington – gosh, that’s twice in one year. The venue is LAMP – rapidly becoming established as Leamington’s new über-cool place for music. LAMP is being developed by Hybrid Arts to extend their musical and social engagement work with young people.

This is potentially the best development for live music that Leamington has seen for some time. There is a real shortage of affordable venues in the town where music can be presented in decent conditions – with well run sound and light, a good audience vibe and – dare I say it? – the possibility of musicians being paid acceptably for their work.

Fortunately for the area’s music scene Hybrid director Tim Ellis has a keen understanding of the benefits as well as the needs of live music. He knows that by providing a platform for new and exciting arts activity LAMP can bring people together in a way that is supportive to performers, socially inclusive and also fun. Working with a range of promoters within and outside Hybrid the venue is developing a strong and intriguing programme including all kinds of new music from dub to indie to blues to folk, with performance poetry, film, drawing, and more.

One of the benefits of this is that Interplay gets seen and heard in a broader context – not just the ‘jazz ghetto’. We know our music appeals to a wide range of people, the challenge is persuading promoters to take it on.  But with the inter-genre approach developing at LAMP there is a new opportunity to reach audiences with open minds and open ears.

Interplay’s appearance will hopefully be the first of a series of jazz and jazz-related events at LAMP. Joe O’Donnell’s Shkayla are coming in June with their exciting mix of Celtic fusion inspired rock-jazz, and in July the brilliant John Etheridge and Chris Garrick will take the stage. There is more great music in the pipeline for the Autumn, so hook up with LAMP and make sure you don’t miss it.
