Philip Ball came to Leamington’s Café Scientifique last year and entertained a packed house with his slightly contentious thoughts about how music functions on the cognitive, aesthetic and emotional levels. The session was all too brief and I willingly parted with the dosh for his book ‘The Music Instinct: how music works and why we can’t do without it’. Any music fan should read ‘This Is Your Brain On Music‘ by Daniel Levitin.
Once a musician, then a studio engineer, Levitin went on to train as a neuroscientist and has specialised in the neural aspects of music ever since. The result is a thoroughly readable book which lays out and provides insight into the many ways in which the brain reacts to, processes and contributes to music. His understanding of music is entirely drawn from real music, not lab-rat sound experiments, and he draws widely from classical, pop, jazz and world music.
