‘The Music Lesson’ – Victor Wooten

I’m indebted to Interplay drummer Dave Balen for sharing this with me, and I want to pass it on.
Many people agree that Victor Wooten is one of the greatest bass guitarists ever – that title seems to undervalue both the instrument and its contribution to music in general and in his hands particularly – nevertheless it’s his preferred term.
In this book Victor sets out to describe a transformation in his musical Continue Reading ‘The Music Lesson’ – Victor Wooten…

I’ve just spent two days listening back to everything we recorded in August at Nick Weldon’s Shoe Factory in Rushden, Northants. Amazingly we put down 20 tunes while we were there, including many of our current repertoire and some we haven’t played much in a while. The results are really gratifying – several ‘first takes’ and many more that need just a little tweak to Continue Reading Interplay recording at Rushden – the next stage…

After an intensive week’s recording at Nick Weldon’s impressive Shoe Factory, Interplay is back in the ‘real’ world today playing in Warwick. The event is special – one of my students is getting married – and I’m also looking forward to hearing the band in front of an audience once more.
Recording at the Shoe Factory was very different to my previous experiences of studio recording. Continue Reading Interplay out of the Recording ‘Bubble’……

Bassist Erika Lyons at Stratford Jazz – new pictures

I recently had the pleasure of hearing my old friend the bassist Erika Lyons at Stratford Jazz with the Pete Canter Quartet (Pete Canter saxes, Jim Blomfield keyboard, Gary Evans drums).
Erika and I go back a long way – in fact many years ago she lent me her spare double bass for many months and so got me started on the whole Contrabass journey. Our paths don’t cross too often these days so this was a chance not to be missed!
The lighting at The Chapel, home of Stratford Jazz, is Continue Reading Bassist Erika Lyons at Stratford Jazz – new pictures…
‘The Music Instinct’ by Philip Ball

Philip Ball came to Leamington’s Café Scientifique last year and entertained a packed house with his slightly contentious thoughts about how music functions on the cognitive, aesthetic and emotional levels. The session was all too brief and I willingly parted with the dosh for his book ‘The Music Instinct: how music works and why we can’t do without it’. Not being a fast reader I have only just finished this substantial but engagingly written work (I had to read ‘Daniel Deronda’ first). Continue Reading ‘The Music Instinct’ by Philip Ball…
